Omotenashi: hospitality. wholeheartedly look after guests. omotenashi is performed without an expectation of anything in return. “Service” can sometimes be somewhat forward or blatant in order to remind the customer that they are being provided a product. On the other hand, omotenashi is frequently invisible to the customer and essentially should never intentionally remind the customer of the hospitality.
Hopsitality. Is not about technology or no technology. It’s about caring for your guests, and doing what’s best for them.
It’s not about whether self-service is good or bad. The kiosk at the ramen shop and the sushi master serving you by hand at the counter stem from the same philosophy. It’s about serving your guests sincerely to the best of your ability. And doing what’s best for them. The tools you choose should best fit the needs of that guest at that time.
